Website measurement

What should a local business track on its website?

Track the actions that show a real customer is trying to reach you: completed quote requests, calls, and bookings. Then compare those actions with the search queries and pages that brought people to your site. Visits alone do not tell you whether the site is helping the business.

A useful site measurement plan follows the customer path from discovery to inquiry. See home-service website design

For a local service business, start with four outcomes: quote forms successfully sent, calls initiated from the website, bookings completed, and qualified leads. Track the page and source associated with each action where your analytics setup allows it. Add supporting measures such as form starts and booking starts to find friction, but do not mistake those for a customer inquiry.

1. Count completed lead actions

A form click is not a lead. Count a form submission after the site confirms it was accepted, and keep an error response from firing the success event. If the visitor books through an online calendar, record a completed booking separately from opening the calendar or choosing a time slot.

Google Analytics recommends the generate_lead event for an initial lead such as a form submission or demo request. GA4 may also collect general form_start and form_submit interactions when enhanced measurement is enabled. Check what the site is actually sending before counting an event as a key event. See Google's recommended event guidance and its lead form measurement tutorial.

2. Measure call intent with the right caveat

A tap on a tel: link shows that someone tried to start a call from the page. It does not prove the call connected, was answered, or became a job. Track phone-link clicks as a separate intent signal; use call records or a properly disclosed call measurement setup if the business needs to understand answered and qualified calls.

Keep this event focused on the page or button, not the visitor's phone number. Analytics event parameters should describe the action, such as the page or CTA label. They should not contain a name, email address, phone number, address, or message someone typed into a form.

3. Connect inquiries to discovery pages

Use Google Search Console to review which queries and pages earn search impressions and clicks. Its Performance report can group data by query or page, and includes clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and average position. Pair that search view with analytics outcomes to ask a practical question: which landing pages attract the right search visits and help people take the next step?

Google's current Search Console guidance also describes a Generative AI performance report for visibility in generative search features. Review that separately from leads: a citation or impression is a discovery signal, not a phone call, quote request, or booked appointment. Start with the Search Console Performance report overview and Google's guidance for AI features.

4. Separate steps in the customer journey

Label the steps so the report tells you where someone stopped. For example:

  • Discovery: search impression, search click, or landing-page visit.
  • Interest: service-page view, contact-page view, or booking start.
  • Inquiry: confirmed form submission, call click, or completed booking.
  • Business outcome: qualified lead, estimate delivered, and work won, if the office can report those results responsibly.

Do not add a value to an inquiry event unless there is a defensible way to calculate it. A form submission is not automatically revenue. A small, accurate event plan is more useful than a dashboard full of inflated conversions.

5. Review a short scorecard monthly

Once a month, compare the same period for the core measures: search impressions and clicks, qualified inquiries by type, landing pages that contributed, and the percentage of inquiries that became real opportunities if that information is available. Look for meaningful patterns over several weeks instead of reacting to one quiet day.

When one step drops, inspect that step. More search impressions with few clicks may point to a mismatch between the query and page title. More service-page visits without inquiries may mean the page does not answer a key question, show relevant proof, or make contact easy. Form starts without confirmed submissions can indicate a form or technical problem. Treat each as a hypothesis to investigate, not proof of a single cause.

6. Keep measurement limited and dependable

Only collect the information the business needs. Keep personal details out of analytics event names and parameters, make any required privacy disclosures, and check that forms and calls reach the normal lead workflow. Test success and error states after website changes. If tracking is blocked or a visitor opts out, the site should still work.

Quick answers

What is the most important website conversion for a local business?

Start with confirmed quote requests, calls, or completed bookings—the actions that represent an actual inquiry. The right primary event depends on how customers contact that business.

Should I count every phone-button click as a lead?

Count it as a call attempt, not as proof of a connected or qualified call. Keep it distinct from a confirmed form or booking.

How do I measure whether SEO brings customers?

Use Search Console to see the queries and pages associated with search impressions and clicks. Pair those metrics with confirmed inquiry events in analytics and, where possible, the lead's eventual business outcome.

How can I measure AI search visibility?

Use official reporting when it is available, such as Search Console's Generative AI performance report, and note qualified referrals or inquiries. No single citation count can establish that AI search caused a sale.

Make the next improvement measurable

A short, trustworthy scorecard helps a business decide whether to improve a service page, repair a form, or make the call action easier to find.
